Covering the soil with hay

We are covering the soil with old hay bales which are full of mould. In the picture Stefan spreading hay on a Cabbage field. Such covering method reduces weeds and welcoms worms which will turn the hay into fine compost soil and by doing it the worms will create a very porous soil.
