Chop Wood Carry Water Plant Seeds is a blog about Self-Sufficient Homesteading. How can we live by creating a sustainable bio-diverse world, instead of by consuming and destroying the only one we have? What kind of teaching have you got if you exclude nature?

Feeding 5:3 Sugar Syrup in a chicken feeder

I was so happy to get a visit from a local Top Bar Hive Beekeeper :) Patrick is only 11km away from where i study. He tried feeding his bees this way so I decided to give it a go. You see I dont mind feeding sugar when absolutelly necessery but the fact that one must open the hive to refill the empty jar gives me a headacke so to speak :)
It is of great benefit to the bees to keep Their Hive Body closed and open it as little as possible to contain the hive atmosphere. After mixing 2 kg of sugar into 12dl of boiling water, i poured the cooled down syrup into a chicken feeder which I placed in the vacinity of the two hives. I placed another bucket above the feeder in case of rain. I made sure to lift one side of the bucket so bees can get under it. I made sure to place dry grass into the feeder tray so bees dont drown. Lets see how this goes and if its gonna trigger robbing.

A conversation about the Perone Hive

Log Hive

I have found a log which is rotten in the centre. This makes it perfect for a log hive. It is very easy to remove the rotten inside which is very soft. I will place it in our schools Apiary so the next year students can populate it if they want.
By the way I got a new veil and a nice bee-shirt ;)

Monday Garden Review

11 Wolves

11 wolves had passed their way
The human way
To their dismay

In the deep of the woods
They are ought to stay
Far away to hunt their pray

Wolves and Men will never share
The natures gold
The bloody pray

Now too close the pack moves in
Too close to their homes
Against men's will

Nervous fingers pull the triggers
Warm blood flowing
The wolves lay still.

(this poem was inspired by the news we heard today at school. One hunter saw 11 wolves passing very close to our school. They usually stay far away from this village. Humans dont like wolves too close to their homes. This never ends good for the wolf pack)

The story of love

Stomach turning
Heart burning
Tears falling
From my eyes

Dreams crashing
Fears flashing
Dark angel
From the past

Pain is lifting
Times are shifting
Green fields
Lie ahead

Mesh-floor removed from the Educational TBH

I have decided to remove the mesh floor from this hive because the bottom board was filling up with the detritus falling from above causing much mould, yet bees could not get to it to clean it up. Now that the mesh floor is gone they have the total control over the whole hive. Im sure the bees will loose less pollen now, since walking over the mesh floor makes them loose much pollen which is only feeding the ants which are under the mesh gathering what falls from above. By the way, the mesh is not a sustainable option either.

Medieval Village Luttrell Psalter

Guided by the detailed and often humorous images of everyday life from the Luttrell Psalter, the Luttrell Psalter Film gives a unique glimpse of a year in the life of a medieval village. Filmed over four seasons, it shows the changing landscape with its fields and flowers, and the daily activities which dominated the lives of our forefathers. This 20-minute film draws on over 35 different images from the margins of the manuscript, allowing the people from the Psalter to walk out from its vellum pages.

Mycorrhiza started Urban Rooftop Beekeeping

I visited Malmö for few days and passed Mycorrhiza's urban kitchen garden. They are doing great work. I was amazed to see them starting with urban roof-top beekeeping on Malmö roofs :) so cool. Will see if I can help them build a few inexpensive African Top Bar Hives this winter :)
